The growth of The Best Shop Group is a vivid reflection of the perseverance and entrepreneurial spirit of a generation of Chinese immigrants in Canada. From a modest, tucked-away retail stall in a Chinese shopping plaza over a decade ago, the business has grown into a well-established chain with 10 department stores across cities including Toronto, Vancouver, Markham, and Mississauga. Chairman Jimmy Chen recalls that after immigrating to Canada in 1994, he was determined to start something of his own, drawing on his previous business experience in China. His journey began with the rental of a small store—just a few hundred square feet—in Century Plaza, Markham. That humble beginning gradually expanded into the large-scale retail enterprise Dato is today, employing over a hundred staff and operating multiple chain stores and warehouse outlets. Despite being the head of a large company, Jimmy Chen remains hands-on in many aspects of the business, frequently traveling and personally managing procurement. “With my experience, I still need to see products myself. The Chinese market is complex—it takes expertise to avoid issues like product mismatches or subpar quality. Some high-demand items also require solid relationships and negotiations, so I often handle these directly,” he explains. In addition to expanding physical store locations, Jimmy has also embraced the digital age.
